Italy

Used on early services, elderly biplane Cant flying boats were replaced by Dornier Wal, Super Wal and Savoia Marchetti flying boats but, in 1934, all four airlines – Aero Espresso Italiano (AEI), Società Aerea Mediterranea (SAM), Società Anonima Navigazione Aerea (SANA) and Società Italiana Servizi Aerei (SISA) – merged to form Ala Littoria. From 1940, when Italy entered the war, flying boats were used as military transports.
